Hello From Camp!

Counting Down the Days...

With the summer just around the corner, everyone on tzevet (staff) is getting excited. We are all looking forward to meeting new campers, reuniting with returning campers, and using our two amazing new buildings! Over the past year, two new buildings were built at machaneh, the first being a new moadon machaneh (clubhouse for the whole camp) and the other being a new moadon madrichim (staff building).

We cannot wait to see everyone in just a few short weeks! Good luck with the end of school and we'll see you soon!

Introducing the 2011 Mazkirut

mazkirut 2011

This year's fabulous team of directors (we call them mazkirut) are unbelievably talented individuals, who have stepped up for the leadership role of running camp.  We break up mazkirut into four different jobs in order to divide the responsibilities between people.

This summer's Co-Director is the beautiful Kali Rifkin Silverman.  She is a student at Temple University, studying Spanish and Urban Planning, and will be studying in Madrid next semester.  Her job is to oversee the campers this summer, and to make sure that they are all safe and having fun.

Molly Rifkin Wernick, our lovely Co-Directorjust graduated from Ithaca College with a degree in Communications.  She spent this spring working as an intern in Washington DC.  Molly will be overseeing the counselors this summer, and ensuring that we are doing everything we can to make this summer amazing.  A fun fact about Molly and Kali is that they are first cousins!

Our Technical Director this summer is my fabulous older sister, Sophia Carol Bernstein (okay, maybe I'm biased) who will be taking care of the technical scheduling and planning aspects of camp.  Sophia attends American University in Washington DC, where she is a double major in Religion and Spanish.

Our Educational Director this summer is Shiah Yuda Irgang Laden.  He is the director of programming and education at camp, and is one of the most creative and talented educators around.  Shiah just graduated from Goucher College where he studied Creative Writing.  A fun fact about Sophia and Shiah is that back in the stone age (1980, i believe) their fathers ran our sister camp, Camp Moshava together.

Finally, our Israeli Emissary is Ronit Cohen.  She currently lives in Philadelphia and runs the year round programming (called the eizor or the ken) but grew up in Israel.

Introducing Molly Bernstein

mollybHello to everyone! This summer I will be blogging from machaneh (camp) in order to keep you updated on the goings on at camp. In order to start this off, I thought I'd briefly introduce myself.
My name is Molly Rachel Bernstein and I am going to be turning 20 in August. I have been going to machaneh ever since Amelim 2000, and have been hooked ever since. I traveled to Israel twice with Habonim Dror (the larger youth movement which Galil is a part of): once on MBI (age 15) and the second time for a 9 month gap year program called Workshop.

Outside of Camp Galil, I am studying Government and Politics and Arabic at the University of Maryland in College Park. I will be starting my sophomore year in the fall, and on campus I am the president and campus liaison of J Street U. On the weekends, I teach Hebrew School in two communities in Washington DC. In my spare time, I love to play sports (specifically basketball), read books, and hang out with my family.

In the last few summers, I have been the madricha (counselor) for the youngest chanichim (campers) ranging from age 8-11. While I enjoyed working with them immensely, this summer I will be blogging, helping our wonderful executive director, Sharon, and taking pictures of all the action during the day. I'm very excited!
