Visitor's Day & Tikkun Olam 2018

Shalom Chaverim V’Mishpachot,

Shalom Friends and Families,

Yesterday Galil welcomed many visitors...all of you! The families and friends of our wonderful chanichimot (campers) traveled to machaneh (camp) to enjoy a lovely picnic and to experience the life of Galil for the day. We started the day with a bit of rain, but the weather pulled through for all of us in sunshine and warmth. Families sat all around the machaneh, sharing stories of their summers so far and meeting the families of friends and alumni of Machaneh Galil. Later in the day, the pool was ready for families and chanichimot to enjoy as well as an ultimate frisbee game in the field.

Visitor’s day is always a great day for the chanichimot to spend some time with their families, and for families to reconnect and even meet up with old friends who used to go to Galil or another Habonim Dror camps together! After our families left for the day, the chanichimot all headed down to the pool to see their friends and madrichimot (counselors).

Today, Machaneh Galil left early in the morning on a Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) mission. As a camp that values social justice and community care, we headed over to the Mitzvah Circle Foundation to actualize our values. We spent the morning talking with the founder, discussing why it is important to help our community and help people who need help that we as Jews can give through mitzvot (good deeds).

We packed boxes of clothing, books, and toys for families who are unable to provide for themselves in a way that is healthy and safe. Over 40,000 people receive care from the foundation, and today, our chanichimot joined over 3,000 yearly volunteers to help provide necessary items to ensure a family can survive amidst poverty and hardship.

We speak at machaneh about our Jewish values and how we want to live in this world together. Tikkun Olam is a tangible way of enacting these values, and today the chanichimot learned about collective responsibility and solidarity.

Happy Monday!
