On our first full day of camp, the sun was shining bright and temperatures were high, but so were the spirits of our campers, who woke up ready to take on the full schedule of activities. We started our day with ivrit shimushit (useful hebrew), a fun themed skit each morning that teaches a hebrew word. On today’s episode, Adam Sandler was searching for a Jewish camp to film his next movie. We learned the hebrew word for movie: seret, then headed to breakfast which was eggs and hash browns.
After breakfast we split up into avoda (chores) groups. Every morning, we do avoda to take care of camp such as toranut (kitchen duty), brecha (pool cleaning), medurah (collecting firewood), briut (cleaning bathrooms), gan (garden work), and ashpa (trash). The kids were introduced to our lovely specialists during sadna’ot (workshops), then they had their first peula shichva (age group activity) of the day. After that was lunch, which was a summer classic – hot dogs!
After lunch was sports. The heat meant it was another busy day at the pool. The rock wall attracted many curious campers looking to test their skills. We also had the finals of our spikeball tournament from first session. After free swim and snack time, we split up into our chuggim (interest groups) for the first time. Board games, art, podcasting, and meditation were in store as campers had an opportunity to do an activity with kids of all ages. Then, we headed to our second peula shichva before learning songs at shira. We had a taste of Philadelphia at dinner, which was cheesesteaks with vegan cheese.
Finally, we got to know the tzevet (staff) with our fairy-themed tochnit erev (evening activity). Each group of fairies was in charge of something and ran a silly station for the kids. We filled out FAFSA forms with the college application fairies, made beards with the rabbi fairies, made butter with the Pennsylvania Dutch fairies, and made dough with the gluten fairies. We put a bow on the day with rad hayom, our end-of-day song and went to bed satisfied after a great first full day.
Joke of the day: What’s a fairy’s favorite restaurant?
Answer: wingstop
