Opening Day – Second Session 2025

Hi! I’m Gabe, the communications specialist for second session 2025. I’ve been coming to Galil for 9 years and this is my first year on tzevet! At camp, my favorite activities are playing soccer, collecting wood for the medurah (boinfire), and playing card games. Im super excited to see what’s in store for second session and bring you all the exciting news.

When I stepped outside this morning, I noticed a thick fog. Maybe we had so much excitement for opening day that it literally filled the air? We fueled up for the day ahead with our usual Sunday breakfast of bagels, then moved on to avodah, where we split up to make sure all of camp was clean and ready for our new arrivals.

As families began to arrive, the fog turned into overcast skies, but the morning was brightened up by the smiles of campers meeting their friends. Coming up the hill, families were greeted by our wooly welcomers: the sheep! Baseballs, spikeballs, and frisbees flew around the Kikar (sports field) as the kids couldn’t wait to get active and move around. A crowd gathered in front of the mini-mo, where a feast of pita, fruit, sandwiches, and salads was waiting for us, prepared by our lovely Tzevet Mitbach (kitchen staff). We performed some rikkud (dance) classics before saying goodbye to the parents.

Then, the kids split up into their schavot (age groups) to introduce themselves and go over the rules of camp. After that came a tour of Galil, where campers saw important camp locations and met the staff who run them. Everyone met up at the toren for our kibud (snack) of ice cream sandwiches, then went to sports. Lots of new campers went to the pool to get swim tested and everyone else was feeling frizzy so they went to the ultimate field to play a big game of ‘bee. After rachatzah (shower time), we had shira (song session) which had to be moved inside the moadon due to rain. Thankfully we were able to move back outside to the toren (flagpole) to lower the flags. Then, we headed to the chadar ochel (dining hall) for a dinner of chili and cornbread.

After dinner and some free time, we met back at the moadon for chuggim (interest groups) skits. The kids were introduced to the four chuggim: board games, crazy art, meditation & yoga, and podcast. Finally, we all headed back to our tzrifim (cabins) to get ready for bed and sleep well before our first full day of camp.

Joke of the day: What did the buffalo family say when they dropped off their son at camp?

Answer: Bi-son!
