Operation: Heat Wave

Today we changed the daily schedule around to compensate for the heat! We started off normally with hitkansut boker (morning gathering) to raise the flag and watch the ivrit shimushit (useful hebrew) skit. The Hebrew word of the day was קוף, which means monkey in English! We soon headed to breakfast where we enjoyed vegan sausages, hashbrowns, eggs, cereal, and fruit! We brought out the gatorade for extra hydration again as well.

After breakfast is avodah (work) and nikayon (cleaning). Pish alef, the first block of the day that campers spend just with their kvutza (age group). Younger kvutzot spent time swimming while our older chanichimot (campers) had their more serious programming in the air conditioning. Bonimot (age 13) practiced their songs and dance for kabbalat shabbat on Friday, where a kvutza performs one Hebrew song, one English song, and one Israeli dance.

After pish alef we went to lunch where we ate tacos and drank sooo much water and gatorade! We then moved into the moadon which is our biggest building and turned on our big fan and the air conditioning to get cover from the sun and heat. Chanichimot played card games, board games, read books, and competed in Minute to Win It games! They hung out until kibbud (snack) time where they had refreshing popsicles.

After our moadon time, chanichimot went into their next activity with their kvutzot where they split up into the other air conditioned buildings around machaneh (camp). This summer we’re using this activity block, pish bet, to tap into our creative sides and engage in more hands-on activities. For example, the tzophimot (age 12) used random objects to create games for each other!

After pish bet we went into chuggim (clubs), which looked different today as well due to the heat. The cross-fit chug that does stretching, yoga, and meditations, offered to include most of our chanichimot today in the moadon for a cool, relaxing time. All the chanichimot returned to the moadon after chuggim and played more games inside.

Before dinner we headed to hitkansut erev (evening gathering), where we lowered the flag. Dinner was delicious fried rice and vegetables with egg rolls on the side. Up next was a pool party! All of machaneh then had a sleepover in the air conditioned moadon to stay cool. Some kvotzot split off to do their own activity to wind down for bed. Bonimot watched a movie outside under the stars and bogrimot (age 14) helped make muffins for Friday’s breakfast before going to sleep! Tomorrow is another hot day, and we will continue to do our best to stay cool. Laila tov!
