Sustainability Sunday

It’s the start of a new week! Let’s run through some highlights of the day!

In Saadnaot (workshops), a time during the day where we work with our specialists to contribute around camp, we’ve begun painting a mural! Our goal for this summer is to introduce more art around machaneh (camp) and this was our first big step.
The Sayarimot spent Pish Alef (the first peula-programming block of the day split by kvutsah) on the ropes course. They all took turns flying across the zipline, bedazzling their belongings, and playing with the frog they found!

During Chuggim (extracurriculars), MagenDavid-Fit (CrossFit) had a blast playing Just Dance, performing partner dances and solo ones, then laying down in some peace and quiet to meditate and center themselves. The best part of the day, though, was the Tochnit Erev (evening activity)! Tonight’s theme was sustainability: what can we do to be more sustainable, and what are we doing that isn’t sustainable? There was a rotation of stations beginning with making eco-bricks. The chanichimot (campers) stuffed plastic bottles completely full with soft plastics, filling it until it was solid. Eco-bricks are sustainable for many reasons, including their use in building out of recycled materials, and also minimizing the amount of waste that is created from litter by keeping everything contained. The next station was painting compost bins to add more beauty to an already beautiful structure we have at machaneh (camp)!

After that was a more educational station, where different articles were posted around like a museum for the chanichimot (campers) to read. Some contained the hard truths of the impact that certain large companies have on animal life, and other brands that don’t harm animals as part of their production process, while other papers told about awesome structures that exist around the world to be more sustainable. The final station was in the Gan (garden) where the chanichimot dug and planted a new garden bed! Our Gan is something we’re very proud of. We actively choose to grow some of our produce, and consistently tending to and helping it flourish is no easy feat! We ended the night on the basketball court, hand in hand, left over right, as we sang Rod Hayom together under the dusky sky.
