Galil Blog
Hi Galil Families!
Today we split into two groups for Tikkun Olam service projects.
Amelimot, Melafafonimot, and Bonimot headed to the Northeast to visit our friends in a retirement community. This is a continuation of a project from last year, where we asked the seniors about their childhood memories and made a record of them to share with their families. It was all about L’dor v’dor! Then, they decorated picture frames together and did some rikud (israeli dancing). It was both a fun and meaningful experience.
Our Tzophimot, Bogrimot, Madatz, and Solelimot headed to Open Hearts Cafe off of Rittenhouse Square to help out. They split into groups to make sun butter and jelly sandwiches for people experiencing food insecurity, sort clothing, and write warm messages to go to people receiving the food. In the end, we had a sikkum to talk about what we would do if we found ourselves in an unfamiliar place with nowhere to stay and had time to ask any questions about homelessness and food insecurity.
We arrived back to machane (camp) just in time for free swim. Then there was a game of broken telephone using titles of famous Galil shira songs. The evening ended with antiracism programming.
Older and younger kids were split up into groups for a simulation of a school day. They learned about redlining, school segregation, free lunch programs, and critical race theory.
It’s incredible all of the things we can learn and do in one day! When your chanichimot (campers) get home, they should tell you about the cool projects they have worked on. There is something very special about this group of young people who care so much for others. As we enter the last week of the summer, we’re gearing up for more exciting events and learning experiences! Stay tuned!
