Tikkun Olam

Shalom Galil loved ones!! This morning we woke up to a seemingly ordinary day, no time travel?? No Revo (Madatz takeover)?? Whelp, thanks Madatz for that fun prank! Regardless, I have a feeling this day might be kef (fun) nonetheless. How so, you ask? Well, to start our day we welcomed the Nitzanimot or Taste of Galil kids, as they prepared for five days of epic fun, basically guaranteeing we see them next summer ;). As our three Nitz (Nitzinimot) made themselves comfortable, the rest of Machaneh (camp) started off the meaningful day of Tikkun Olam, a day focused on repairing the world.

To begin, all Schikvot (Age groups) were led through similar Pish Alefs (Peulot by Shikva A), surrounding the idea that Tikkun Olam is kef, sorta like Tikkef Olam?? Moving this idea on throughout the day we focused on spreading joy and giving back in a meaningful but also joyous way, but not before enjoying a yummy lunch of hamburgers and french fries! To start out the hands-on portion of the day, we invited several Galil parents, that’s right, blog readers like yourselves, to educate our youth on different ways that we can repair the world with more abstract methods. From Tamara Cohen, representing Moving Traditions, we learned about gender and feelings, from Chana and Shawn, kids got to immerse themselves into the world of music and its importance in our world, and finally, from Ari Brochin, chanachimot (campers) were educated on refugee crises around the world.

Moving on to a focus on repairing Galil, kids were given the opportunity to choose amongst a variety of repairs or beautifications of our Machaneh. From mosaic creation to spreading joy to our caretakers with cookies and letters (you think I count as a caretaker?), the kids had kef spreading joy throughout our camp. Zooming out towards repairing the world, because it is Tikkun Olam after all, kids once again had the opportunity to pick from various Chugim Ritzinim (Serious Interest Groups), including snack packaging and writing letters to our congresspeople. For the former, Keri Fisher from Manna on Main Street, and another pretty rad Galil parent, we had the opportunity to create and package snack mixes to go along with meals given out through Meals on Wheels. And for the latter, after being informed on both our Pennsylvania representatives and senators, Chanachimot wrote letters urging them to consider or reconsider issues important to our movement (and let’s just say some of those letters made me worry I might be out of a tafkid (role)😉).

Alas, with snack bags properly filled, besides the few pieces that kids swore fell on the ground and just had to be eaten, and letters eloquently written, we made our way to Hitkansut Erev (evening flag lowering) and dinner, for a much needed carb loaded feast of Ravioli and alfredo sauce. Then to conclude our day, we engaged in fierce activism that culminated in a peaceful protest of issues chosen by each Schikva (Age Group) that included ones such as Abortion Rights, Climate Justice, and Anti-AI. So with joy properly spread and voices certainly heard (at least all the way to the Chadar Ohel (Dining hall)), we made our way back to our tzrifim (cabins) to rest for a possibly special sort of day tomorrow??
